Mini Report

The word computer referred once to a person who used to do calculations and computations in his head. During the 20th century, that particular word was referred to a developed machine, which carried out all sorts of computations. It began from a "castle clock" invented by Al Jazari to a "textile loom" invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard. Throughout time the idea was taken to a high sort of level. Until it reached to this improved device you see in most households and work places. Computers arose in the 1970s. They are the widest spread technology in the world.

Computers have been a great help, especially in work places. For example, before employees used to handle a lot of paper work some papers get lost and some ruined, and even some get stolen. Computers have changed that, now all an employee has to do is type in data into certain system where it can be saved. This way it cannot be tampered with and it would be very easy to find. It saves the employees and the computers so much time. It has been so very important that even companies pay a lot of money to make their workers take a course in ICDL, which is the study of how to use a computer. Even old people I know take that test, because they are curious. They want to know how it works and what it does, which I find very exhilarating!

The computer has organized simple procedures. Firstly communicating with people outside the region of your country. Furthermore, it is cheap, easy, fast, and more accurate. Lastly, it has improved our lifestyle and until this day they are working on extending its features for a better future.

Porsche 911 Turbo VS Bugatti

LSEC N100Research skills 3 – Report and MLA referencing (10%)

These days several rich high classed people enjoy having sports cars such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, and Bugatti. There are a lot of differences between each car mentioned. Some differences are in quality, performance, shape and design and also the price itself. Similarities and differences between Bugatti and Porsche will be discussed in this essay.

Some couple similarities between the Bugatti and the Porsche 911 Turbo. The first similarity is that both of them are sport cars. Secondly, both of them are rich people firsts desire and choice for their high quality. Lastly, both cars have 2 seats and a back engine which was built by a European country.

On the other hand there are some differences. Firstly, the Bugatti can reach from 0 - 60 in 2.5 seconds while the Porsche 911 turbo can reach it in 3.6 seconds (http://Autoblog.com/category/porsche). Secondly, the Bugatti is way more expensive than the Porsche which costs around 1.6 million dollars while the Porsche costs 143,800 dollars (http://www.porsche.com/international/models/911/911-turbo/). The third difference is that the torque of the Bugatti is 952 pound feet (http://Bugatti-configurator.com) and the Porsche torque is 457 pound feet.

We Conclude that the Bugatti is more powerful than the Porsche 911 as well as in the design it is superior, but in my own opinion I see that the Bugatti is the dream car for all sports car fans but the problem is that its manufacture is limited and it's highly expensive while in the other hand the Porsche has excellent features and performance and its price could be affordable and could be bought easily which make it more widely spread than the Bugatti.

Reading Summary Assessment

Summary

China has the highest rate of women committing suicide where 1.5 million women attempt suicide and 150,000 succeed. In rural areas the suicide rate is 300% more than cities. Traditional attitudes in marriage is a huge problem which still prevails, where it is arranged in which the groom's parents buy the bride like a business deal. The wife will have emotional problems dealing with the family of the groom. If the wife finds respect from the family of the husband she'll be all right. Most women see that there is no way out of an unhappy marriage. Attempting suicide by women is a way of asking for better treatment from their husbands. In China traditional attirudes are hard to change. Social security is weak in rural areas where sons are preferred to daughters. Daughters must move to their husbands family home when married. Mixing this with strict birth control policies results in many female foetuses being aborted. Women will face a terrible future in 20 years where prostitution and sexual voilence will be increased. Providing women with Xu Rong's organisation of attempting to prevent suicide will support groups where they can discuss their feeling. Schools in rural areas teach young women the skills to build lives for themselves. Young women working far from their homes gain a lot of confidence.

Main Idea

The article is drawing the attention to suicide attempts by Chinease women. There are suicidal women in rural areas beacause of bad marriage arrangments.

Comment

In my opinion I think the goverment should provide jobs for the young women in order to prevent committing suicide. I want to know more about men committing suicide.

The Eighth Wonder of the World

Libya's Great Man-Made River Project

The Eighth Wonder of the World

Summary:

This article by John Watson (18.03.2006) describes the Great Man-Made River Project in Libya. Libya is a mainly desert country and finding a supply of fresh, clean water has become a government priority, made more pressing by increased industrialization.

Oil exploration in the 1950s revealed vast aquifers beneath Libya’s southern desert. How to get this fossil water to the two main cities, Benghazi and Tripoli, where most Libyans live? Libya had oil money to pay for pipelines to transport the water but needed the engineering expertise of foreign companies to implement the scheme. Phase 1, started in 1993, brought water from eastern well-fields to Benghazi. In 1996 phase 2, bringing water from western wells to Tripoli was completed. Phase 3 was still under construction in 2006.

The Brega cylinder pipe factory manufactures the 4m-diameter pipes which transport the water from the desert to the coast. The pipes are designed to last 50 years and now most of the manufacturing is done by Libyans. With water now available in coastal cities, the Libyan government is beginning to use water for agriculture. It is uncertain whether this will succeed, partly because no-one knows how long the water will last.

197 words

The main idea:

The main idea of the article is to explain how Libya implemented a plan to transport water from underground aquifers in the desert to the large coastal cities where most Libyans live. The project has been successful and, now that the large cities like Tripoli and Benghazi are supplied with fresh tap water, the Libyans are hoping to introduce irrigation schemes to develop agriculture,

Opinion:

I think it’s a particularly relevant article for people living in desert countries such as the UAE. It would be interesting to find out if this country has underground aquifers which could be utilized in a similar way. Like Libya, the UAE has the wealth from its massive oil reserves to fund a similar project, should it be feasible.
