Summary

China has the highest rate of women committing suicide where 1.5 million women attempt suicide and 150,000 succeed. In rural areas the suicide rate is 300% more than cities. Traditional attitudes in marriage is a huge problem which still prevails, where it is arranged in which the groom's parents buy the bride like a business deal. The wife will have emotional problems dealing with the family of the groom. If the wife finds respect from the family of the husband she'll be all right. Most women see that there is no way out of an unhappy marriage. Attempting suicide by women is a way of asking for better treatment from their husbands. In China traditional attirudes are hard to change. Social security is weak in rural areas where sons are preferred to daughters. Daughters must move to their husbands family home when married. Mixing this with strict birth control policies results in many female foetuses being aborted. Women will face a terrible future in 20 years where prostitution and sexual voilence will be increased. Providing women with Xu Rong's organisation of attempting to prevent suicide will support groups where they can discuss their feeling. Schools in rural areas teach young women the skills to build lives for themselves. Young women working far from their homes gain a lot of confidence.


Main Idea

The article is drawing the attention to suicide attempts by Chinease women. There are suicidal women in rural areas beacause of bad marriage arrangments.


Comment

In my opinion I think the goverment should provide jobs for the young women in order to prevent committing suicide. I want to know more about men committing suicide.
